If you are a regular exerciser, there is no reason to stop exercising once you conceive. And if you have never exercised, now is the time to make sure you are healthier than ever before…so get started.

Benefits of Exercise during Pregnancy

• Enhances stability, balance and posture

• Reduces joint pain

• Easier and faster delivery

• Reduces need for operative intervention (c-section/ forceps)

• Overall weight management

One general rule to keep in mind for exercise during pregnancy is that safety always comes first. You must ensure you have your gynaecologists approval for beginning a pre natal class. Also, it is extremely important to listen to your body and not unnecessarily push yourself. Participate in a low to moderate intensity exercise program and watch for signs of contraindications to exercise.

Contraindications of Exercise:

• Vaginal bleeding

• Feeling dizzy or faint

• Shortness of breath before starting exercise

• Chest pain

• Headache

• Regular, painful contractions of the uterus

• Fluid leaking from the vagina

Pregnant women may feel more energetic to begin exercising only in the second trimester once the hormones settle down and the body adapts to the changes.

I wish you a healthy pregnancy and delivery. While you are here, you may want to check out my Pre-natal Exercise Program.
